Ms. Meri 4,5 grade
Second Grade GEP Second Grade GEP students have been busy preparing for our field trip to the Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island. The class will actually walk in the marsh in pursuit of periwinkle snails. We have been reading the book titled “And the Tide Comes In…” by Meryl Alder which teaches about our coastal marshland. Each child has chosen a creature to research and will present their findings to the class. The students have even been “focusing” on sand and mud using microscopes and have drawn what they saw in their observation journals (aka O.J.s).
Third Grade GEP Third Grade GEP students have been learning about scientific classification and dichotomous keys. The class practiced the process by using shoes and pictures from magazines and by categorizing them..
In addition to learning about ways to organize items according to their characteristics, students have been honing their observational skills. In preparation for our field trip to the Botanical Gardens, the students spent time in our Monet-inspired garden sketching the plants. Some of the plants had their scientific names listed, so we were able to discuss binomial nomenclature. Some students have been involved in planting the flowers, while others have started radishes and carrots from seeds! One courageous group even helped Mr. Christopher to put a raised bed into place.
